Arafura Swamp Indigenous Protected Area
The Arafura Swamp in north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory was one of seven proposed Indigenous Protected Areas announced by the Australian Government in October 2019.
The Arafura Swamp Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) has been accepted with a dedication ceremony being held on 22 October 2025. Our Healthy Country Plan has been amended for 2025-2035, incorporating updated information and management strategies for the IPA.

Meet the Ranger Groups
Arafura Ranger groups help traditional owners keep our indigenous knowledge strong and make sure it is being used to look after country. Groups include Balmawirrey Dhipirri Rangers, Gurruwiling Rangers, Ramingining Wanga Djakamirr Rangers, Malnyangarnak Rangers and Arafura Catchment Management’s Dhupuwamirri Rangers, Donydji Rangers and Mirrngatja Rangers.
